Africa is the third largest continent in the world in size [note 1] and the second largest in population. It covers an area of ??about 30.2 million square kilometers, including the surrounding islands, and occupies 6% of the Earth's total surface area and 20.4 percent of the total land area.
The United Nations's average population estimate for 2020 is estimated at 1,340,598,000 [1] about 16% of the world's population and is the youngest of all continents, with 50% of Africans being 19 years old. or younger.
The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Suez Canal and the Red Sea along the Sinai Peninsula to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.
Africa includes Madagascar and various archipelagos. It has 54 fully recognized sovereign states, nine regions and two de facto independent states with limited recognition.
The largest country in Africa in size is Algeria and in population Nigeria. Africa, and especially East Africa, is generally accepted as the place of origin of humans and the human industry, as evidenced by the discovery of the oldest of these and their ancestors, as well as later ones dating to seven million years ago.
such as Sahelanthropus tchadensis, Australopithecus africanus, A. afarensis, Homo erectus, H. habilis and H. ergaster. The oldest Homo sapiens (modern man) was found in Ethiopia and dates back to 200,000 years ago.
Africa is located on either side of the equator and includes a variety of climatic regions ranging from the northern temperate zone to the southern.
Europe, Asia, Africa Once upon a time, many millions of years ago, all three continents seemed to be one. Africa differs from the other two in its geomorphological character, climate and flora. This continent still differs from the other two in the character of the historical and cultural development that followed, but even in the extent that characterizes it at least in recent years.
Geographically, Africa is defined: to the north it is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, to the east, before the Suez Canal, it was connected to the ancient continent by the Sinai Isthmus, while from Asia it is separated by the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. It is also bathed in the east by the Indian Ocean. Between the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea lies the Bab al-Madeb Strait, which is about 70 kilometers wide.
To the south it is raining again from the Indian Ocean as well as from the Atlantic Ocean. To the west it is again bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, while the Strait of Gibraltar separates it from Europe. At this point Africa's distance from Europe is minimal and it reaches just 14 kilometers.
